Short CV

Vítor J.P. Vilar earned his BSc in Chemical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) in 2001. He completed his PhD in Chemical Engineering at FEUP in 2006, in Environmental Technologies. Between May 2006 to Aug. 2007 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at FEUP in environmental monitoring and assessment of surface water quality. He pursued his post-doctorate research between Sep. 2007 and June 2009 in solar driven advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), at FEUP and Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA). From Jul. 2009 to Dec. 2013 he worked as Assistant Researcher in the Associate Laboratory LSRE-LCM, FEUP, under the Ciência 2008 program. Since Dec. 2014 he has been Principal Researcher in LSRE-LCM, under the Investigator FCT 2013 program. In 2014, he was awarded a three-year “Special Visiting Researcher” grant, at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, sponsored by the Brazilian Ciência Sem Fronteiras program.

Since 2010, he has been an assistant at FEUP for several course units in the Integrated Master in Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering Programme. He is currently one of the editors of the Environmental Science and Pollution Research (ESPR) Journal (Springer) and Special Issue Editor of the Journal of Hazardous Materials and ESPR. He has participated as a committee member or as program chair in nine international conferences on environmental engineering, delivering 38 plenary/keynote/invited lectures at international conferences and scientific institutions. He is member of the EU COST Action ES1403UK (NEREUS) and European Ph.D. School on AOPs.

He is the author and co-author of more than 380 scientific publications, including 3 conference books, 10 book chapters, 3 editorials, 150 papers (96 in the last 5 years) in peer-reviewed international scientific periodicals (h index: 31 and 3176 citations), 8 papers in national scientific periodicals, more than 210 contributions in conference proceedings and a co-inventor of 1 patent, receiving 8 prizes in total. 92 papers have been published within 25% of the highest impact factor. Furthermore, he has published 29 papers as the first author, 99 papers as a senior (corresponding) author, and 101 papers independently from his PhD supervisor. Since 2007, he has been the scientific leader of the Environmental Science and Engineering group inside LSRE-LCM, participating actively in different projects (5 international, 16 national R&D projects and 3 contracts with private companies) that has granted research funds exceeding 4 million euros.

Since obtaining his PhD degree, he has mentored 14 researchers, 21 master students, 18 Ph.D. students, and 27 Postdoctoral researchers. He is currently the supervisor of 1 master student, 8 Ph.D. students, and 5 postdoctoral researchers. He has also participated in 61 academic juries (33 MSc and 28 PhD) and as evaluator of national/international research projects (UEFISCDI, FCT, CNPq, CONICYT).
